The United States has started withdrawing non-essential embassy staff and family members from Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, amid growing concerns over deteriorating security conditions across the country.

In a sharply worded updated travel advisory, Washington urged American citizens to reconsider any plans to travel to Nigeria, citing a combination of escalating threats including violent crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.

Officials warned that incidents such as armed robbery, carjacking, and kidnapping for ransom are not only widespread but increasingly brazen. Americans, the advisory noted, are often perceived as wealthy and may be deliberately targeted by criminal groups.

The warning also underscored the persistent threat of terrorist attacks, which could occur without warning in public spaces. Markets, shopping centers, hotels, places of worship, and large gatherings were highlighted as particularly vulnerable locations.

Beyond security concerns, the advisory raised alarms about Nigeria’s healthcare system, describing services as limited and inconsistent. Many medical facilities, it said, fall short of the standards typically found in the United States and Europe, potentially complicating emergency response for travelers.

The evacuation move signals heightened urgency from U.S. officials and reflects broader concerns within the international community about stability in Africa’s most populous nation. Nigerian authorities have yet to issue a formal response to the latest U.S. measures, but the development is likely to intensify scrutiny on the country’s internal security challenges.

For now, U.S. officials are urging caution, emphasizing that the risks extend nationwide and advising citizens already in Nigeria to remain vigilant and review their personal security plans.
