Two Mbare Thieves Jailed After Being Caught Wearing Victim’s Stolen Clothes, Zimbabwe

Two men from Mbare, Zimbabwe, have been sentenced to six months in jail after police caught them wearing clothes stolen during a burglary at a woman’s home.

The convicts, Takudzwa Munetsi (27) and Brian Madakudya (29), were found guilty of unlawful entry by the Mbare Magistrate’s Court. They each received a 12-month sentence, with six months suspended on conditions of good behavior and repayment of stolen goods.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the break-in occurred on August 26, 2025, when the complainant locked her home and traveled to her rural village. Upon returning the next day, she discovered that burglars had forced their way in, stealing groceries, clothing, and household items worth about US$500.

The case took an unexpected twist on October 2, when the victim spotted Madakudya in public wearing one of her stolen outfits. She immediately alerted police, leading to his arrest. During interrogation, he confessed and implicated Munetsi, who was later detained. Only US$3 worth of property was recovered, as most of the items had already been sold or discarded.

The court ordered both men to pay US$497 in restitution and serve an effective six-month jail term.

In delivering judgment, the magistrate condemned their actions, warning that housebreaking and theft are serious offences that violate public safety and community peace.

“Unlawful entry and theft undermine the sanctity of people’s homes. Offenders must face the full weight of the law,” the magistrate said.

The conviction has drawn public attention for its unusual twist — the thieves’ own carelessness in flaunting stolen clothes ultimately led to their downfall.
