In a ceremony at the White House marking Black History Month, President Donald Trump announced the latest additions to the National Garden of American Heroes, a project he unveiled in 2020. The garden, located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., aims to celebrate heroic figures in American history.
Trump revealed that statues of late NBA star Kobe Bryant, boxing legend Muhammad Ali, and civil rights icon and MLB pioneer Jackie Robinson will be featured in the garden. These sports legends will be joined by renowned civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Coretta Scott King, and Frederick Douglass.
The National Garden of American Heroes is designed to honor heroes from all walks of life, with statues, busts, and plaques commemorating their contributions to the country. The project has been met with both praise and criticism, with some historians questioning the selection process and the inclusion of certain figures.
The garden is part of Trump’s broader effort to promote patriotism and preserve American history. The project has been revived after President Joe Biden revoked the executive order establishing the garden in 2021. Trump reinstated the order in January 2025, paving the way for the garden’s development.
