A top official of Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) of Ghana amid his ongoing investigation into allegations of illegal gold mining activities widely known in Ghana as galamsey.
Wontumi, who is the NPP Chairman for the Ashanti Region, was picked up by officials of EOCO in Accra on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 following his visit to the headquarters of Ghana’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
His arrest comes after he had earlier appeared before the CID on Monday, May 26, 2025 and was cautioned for allegedly engaging in gold mining operations without a license, polluting water bodies and unlawfully entering forest reserves in Ghana.
It however remains unclear why he was arrested by EOCO while the CID had already started investigating him.
The CID had in a statement dated Monday, May 26, 2025 said Chairman Wontumi cooperated fully with investigators and submitted a formal statement.
After his appearance on Monday, he was granted bail by the CID and was asked to return at their headquarters on Tuesday for further questioning. He was then arrested when he left the CID on Tuesday.
