Tobi Amusan Clinches Silver at Tokyo 2025 World Championships

TOKYO, JAPAN — Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, delivered a sensational performance in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships, securing a silver medal with a blazing time of 12.29s. The 28-year-old sprint icon, who made history in 2022 by becoming the first Nigerian and African to win the world title, was narrowly edged out for gold.

Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji took the top spot, storming to victory in a national record of 12.24s. The United States’ Grace Stark earned the bronze medal with a time of 12.34s, while her compatriot Masai Russell finished fourth at 12.44s.

Amusan’s silver medal is a significant achievement, adding to her impressive list of accolades, which includes her world record of 12.12s, multiple Diamond League titles, and Commonwealth Games gold. Her performance is seen as a strong comeback after she missed the final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, proving she remains among the world’s elite hurdlers.

The Nigerian team’s medal hopes are still alive in Tokyo. In the men’s 400m hurdles, Ezekiel Nathaniel advanced to the semifinals after completing his heat in 48.37s. The 21-year-old, a rising star in the sport, is now set to compete for a spot in the final, with his sights set on a podium finish.
