President Bola Tinubu has confirmed the death of former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, ordering the Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, to go to Lodon and bring Mr. Buhari’s body back home to Nigeria.
The confirmation of Buhari’s death was made in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to President Tinubu, on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Buhari died in London at about 4:30 pm on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a prolonged illness.
The statement said “President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs. Aishat Buhari, the widow of the late President, to express his heartfelt condolences.”
As a mark of respect for Mr. Buhari, President Tinubu has also directed that national flags across Nigeria be flown at half-mast.
The late former President had a long battle with prostate cancer which saw him going to London on several occasions for treatment.
Mr. Buhari served as the president of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 on the ticket of current ruling APC party.
A retired Nigerian army major general, he was first the military head of state of Nigeria from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985.
