Mozambique’s maritime authorities have launched a search and rescue operation after an Indian cargo vessel sank near the port of Beira, leaving three Indian crew members dead and one Mozambican missing.
The incident occurred on October 16 and involved the Cara, a vessel owned by Indian shipping company Unik Marine Service. According to the Mozambique Maritime Transport Institute (ITRANSMAR), the ship was carrying 21 crew members — 14 Indians and seven Mozambicans — when it went down off the coast of Sofala province.
Authorities confirmed that five Indian nationals and six Mozambicans were rescued alive. The bodies of three Indian crew members have been recovered, while the search continues for the missing Mozambican sailor.
In a public statement, ITRANSMAR urged members of the maritime community — including fishermen, shipowners, and vessel operators — to assist by reporting any signs of bodies or debris related to the wreck.
“ITRANSMAR remains in constant contact with the fishing and maritime community and will continue coordinating with partners and local entities to ensure a swift and effective response,” the agency said.
The port of Beira, where the tragedy occurred, is one of southern Africa’s key gateways for regional cargo traffic.
