Popular actor Thembinkosi Mthembu at the weekend won his first acting award at the 11th Annual Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and TV Awards.
The Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards recognise outstanding achievement and excellence within the South African Film and Television industry, with a special focus on KwaZulu-Natal.
Mthembu was awarded Best Actor–TV at the awards ceremony in Durban on Saturday. Mthembu won the top award for his role in “Shaka iLembe”, this comes after he recently celebrated his 30th birthday.
The actor in 2023 dominated South African screens, he starred in “Shaka iLembe” as King Dingiswayo the son of King Jobe of the Mthethwa, his lead role as Bonga in “Adulting” made him the talk of the industry.
He went on to wow audiences with his portrayal of Bandile in South Africa’s first modern day Western series “Outlaws” on Showmax.
Another first time winner at the Simon Sabela Awards was veteran actor Melusi Yeni, who is currently on Mzansi Magic’s telenovela “Sibongile and the Dlaminis” where he portrays the character of Sokhobase, which earned him the award.
KwaZulu-Natal has several reality shows that are dominating screens nationwide, leading to the introduction of a public voting category deciding on the winner. The Best Reality Show award went to “KwaNjomane” on Mzansi Magic.
Other big winners include Deli Malinga Best Actress–TV, Masoja Msiza as the Best Actor–Film, Jo-Anne Reyneke Best Actress–Film award.
KwaZulu Natal born Nomalanga Shozi hosted the awards for the first time and went all out ensuring to dress to the nines in a Masango by Siphosihle design.
