Buckingham Palace has announced with “deep sorrow” that the Duchess of Kent has passed away at the age of 92. She died “peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family.”
The Duchess, born Katharine, was the oldest member of the Royal Family and the wife of Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, a first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The Prince and Princess of Wales expressed their condolences, stating that the duchess would be a “much missed member of the family” who had “worked tirelessly to help others and supported many causes, including through her love of music.”
She was a familiar figure at the Wimbledon tennis championships, where she famously consoled a tearful Jana Novotna in 1993 after a loss and regularly handed out trophies. Flags on royal residences, including Buckingham Palace, have been lowered to half-mast in her honor.
