Nigerian highlife torchbearers The Cavemen—the brotherly duo of Kingsley Okorie and Benjamin James—have kicked off 2025 with the release of their infectious new single, “Dancing Shoes.” The track, which dropped at midnight following a week of cryptic teasers across social media, marks their first release of the year and sets the tone for their highly anticipated third album, Cavy in the City, slated for later in 2025.
Hailing from Orlu, Imo State, The Cavemen have carved a distinct niche as modern custodians of highlife music, merging the genre’s rootsy textures with soul, jazz, and contemporary flair. Dancing Shoes builds on this sonic legacy, offering a vibrant, rhythmic celebration of love, movement, and connection.
Rooted in Rhythm and Soul
With its buoyant tempo, lush guitar work, earthy percussion, and warm vocal harmonies, Dancing Shoes is an invitation to let loose and embrace joy. The lyrics, though light and breezy, carry a nostalgic undertone, reminding listeners of simpler times while staying grounded in the now. The result is a track that feels timeless—equally at home on a dancefloor or during an intimate jam session.
“This song is for everyone who finds freedom in rhythm,” the duo shared on Instagram. “Wear your dancing shoes, and let your spirit move.“
A New Chapter Begins
The release follows 2024’s Love and Highlife and their acclaimed 2020 debut Roots, which earned them the Best Alternative Album at The Headies. With Dancing Shoes, The Cavemen continue to reject the hyper-materialism of modern Afrobeats in favor of messages grounded in heritage, love, and community.
Their Cavy in the City tour—named after the upcoming album—has already begun with sold-out stops in Montreal (May 2) and Toronto (May 4), where the duo’s magnetic live energy continues to captivate global audiences.
As Cavy in the City looms, Dancing Shoes is not just a song—it’s a joyful preview of a larger vision, reaffirming The Cavemen’s commitment to evolving the highlife genre while staying deeply rooted in its spirit.
