On August 11, 2025, Telecel Ghana welcomed 100 girls from primary and junior high schools in Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions to its Accra headquarters for the National Girls-in-ICT Open Day, organized by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation. The initiative, part of Ghana’s strategy to bridge the gender gap in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), provided hands-on exposure to technology careers, as reported by Graphic Online and GhanaWeb.
The event featured an AI-powered talking robot demonstration, engaging the girls with interactive Q&A, followed by robotics and coding workshops where they built simple robots and learned basic programming. Telecel’s Women in Tech group mentored the participants, sharing insights on careers in data analytics, cybersecurity, digital transformation, engineering, robotics, and digital marketing. Victoria Aidoo, a Digital Transformation Specialist, stated, “Mentoring these young girls gives them the chance to know the kind of roles that exist in the tech space and make them aware of the possibilities around them.”
Students like Shelly Sakyiwaa from Achimota Basic School expressed enthusiasm for cybersecurity, saying, “I’m eager to learn more about the field after the mentoring session.” Nkunim Kyerewaa Krankyi from St. Monica’s Junior High School added, “I will keep on trying and never give up… I will do all I can to achieve my dreams and work in the technology industry.” Augusta Andrews, Telecel’s Director of Legal and External Affairs, emphasized, “Technology is not a boys-only space. With the right guidance and determination, anyone can innovate, lead, and succeed in this industry.”
The initiative aligns with global efforts to address the underrepresentation of women in STEM, where only 28% of the workforce is female, per the International Telecommunication Union. X posts, such as from @GhanaGirlsICT, praised the event’s impact, with @TechBit noting, “This is how you inspire the next generation of female coders and engineers.” Telecel reaffirmed its commitment to fostering diversity in Ghana’s digital economy through such programs.
