Sydney Talker Opens Up on Painful Childhood Marked by Rejection, Drug Abuse, and Instability

Popular Nigerian skit maker Sydney Egere, widely known as Sydney Talker, has shared a deeply personal account of his troubled childhood, revealing a past filled with emotional pain, rejection, and constant instability caused by a broken family dynamic.

In a candid interview with footballer Rasheedat Ajibade, Sydney recounted the difficult experiences he endured as a child growing up in a dysfunctional home. He revealed that his parents’ fractured relationship, particularly his father’s addiction to drugs, left him caught in a cycle of neglect and displacement.

“I was a child that the family never wanted,” Sydney admitted. “I stayed with the rich, the poor, average, village, golden house—think about it, I did everything. Finally stayed with my aunty, and that’s when God started intervening in my life.”

Sydney explained how he was constantly moved between relatives, living with his aunt, uncle, cousins, and even his grandmother at various points. The root of this instability, he said, stemmed from the tension between his parents. His father, the last born of the family, struggled with drug addiction and lacked support from his family. This instability drove Sydney’s mother to initially reject him.

“My mum was taking me back to my father, my father was taking me back to my mum,” he recalled. “Finally, my mum came to accept that she just had to accept me.”

One of the most heartbreaking revelations came when Sydney shared that his mother had attempted to abort him—not once, but twice—due to the toxic relationship she had with his father. After being warned by someone that the child would “come back,” she reunited with Sydney’s father and conceived him again. Even then, another attempt to terminate the pregnancy was halted by his grandmother, who promised to raise him.

“My grandma said, ‘Don’t worry, bring him, I will train him.’ That’s how I stayed with my grandma and started staying with family back and front,” he said.

Sydney’s upbringing was anything but stable. He bounced between relatives, sometimes due to financial hardship, other times due to emotional strain within the family.

“I stayed with my mum, my aunty, my uncle, my cousin—I literally stayed everywhere. I’ve seen everything. I literally saw different stuff,” he added.

Despite his difficult beginnings, Sydney Talker has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most successful digital comedians, known for his unique style, creativity, and ability to bring laughter to millions. His story of resilience is now inspiring others, serving as a reminder that adversity can be transformed into triumph with faith, perseverance, and purpose.
