Spanish Legend Jordi Alba to Retire at Season’s End

Former Spanish international and Inter Miami defender Jordi Alba announced his decision to retire from professional football at the conclusion of the ongoing Major League Soccer (MLS) season.

The 36-year-old attacking left-back confirmed the decision via a post on Instagram, stating that he feels it is the “right time to open a new chapter and close the previous one with the best possible feeling.”

A Decorated Career

Alba’s career spanned over a decade at the highest level, making him one of the most decorated fullbacks of his generation:

Club Career (Barcelona & Inter Miami)

  • Barcelona (2012–2023): Alba was a pivotal figure during one of FC Barcelona’s most dominant eras. He secured six La Liga titles and a Champions League crown.
  • Inter Miami (2023–2024): He joined the MLS side in 2023, reuniting with his former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets.

International Career (Spain)

  • Caps: He earned 93 caps for the Spanish national team between 2011 and 2023.
  • Major Tournament Win: Alba was a key player in the Spain squad that romped to victory at the 2012 European Championship.

Alba noted that while he had initially planned to extend his time at Inter Miami through the 2027 season, he ultimately decided to call time on his career. He leaves the sport having given it “every ounce of passion.”
