Sista Afia Calls Out TGMA Snubs, Hopes for Redemption in 2024 Awards

Ghanaian singer Sista Afia has voiced her frustration over what she sees as a pattern of being overlooked by the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), despite her hard work and contributions to the industry.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz on February 3, she recalled her first major disappointment in 2017, when her hit song Jeje featuring Shatta Wale failed to secure a nomination. While she finally broke into the awards in 2021 with nominations for Corner Corner featuring Kelvyn Boy and Weather featuring Medikal, she believes subsequent hits like Asuoden were unfairly ignored.

Aiming for Recognition in 2024

Despite past disappointments, Sista Afia is optimistic about this year’s awards, revealing that she is targeting nominations in three major categories:

  • Highlife Song of the Year
  • Highlife Artiste of the Year
  • Collaboration of the Year

“With this year’s TGMA, the awards I’m eyeing are Highlife Song of the Year, Highlife Artiste of the Year, and Collaboration of the Year,” she stated.

Beyond Awards: Giving Back to Society

While recognition matters, Sista Afia believes musicians have a greater responsibility to society. She urged fellow artists to support education and vulnerable communities, suggesting initiatives like printing books for students and helping disabled children.

“I think as musicians, we can come together and help society in so many ways,” she emphasized.

With her eyes set on TGMA 2024, Sista Afia remains determined to push her craft while using her platform for positive change. Whether the awards body will acknowledge her this year remains to be seen.
