Several passengers sustained injuries on Thursday morning, October 30, after two Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses collided along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway near the Mangoro–Onipetesi area of Ikeja, Lagos.
Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred within the dedicated BRT lane when one of the buses attempted to avoid a commercial bus that had illegally entered the restricted corridor. In the process, it reportedly veered into the path of an oncoming BRT bus, resulting in a head-on collision.
“The driver was trying to avoid hitting the commercial bus that suddenly drove into the BRT lane,” an eyewitness told reporters. “Unfortunately, he rammed into another BRT coming from the opposite direction.”
Emergency responders, assisted by bystanders, quickly arrived at the scene to rescue and transport injured passengers to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials confirmed that no fatalities were recorded in the incident.
The accident caused major traffic congestion along the busy route until traffic management personnel cleared the wrecked vehicles and restored movement.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the crash and reiterated warnings to commercial drivers against using the BRT-only lanes, emphasizing that such violations continue to endanger lives and disrupt traffic flow across Lagos.
