Samuel Umtiti Calls Time on Career at 31, Ending Career Marked by Injuries

French World Cup-winning defender Samuel Umtiti has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. The center-back, who has been without a club since leaving Lille at the end of last season, has made the decision after years of battling persistent knee problems that have plagued his career.

Umtiti’s career began at Olympique Lyonnais before he made a high-profile move to FC Barcelona in 2016. It was at the Catalan club that he experienced his most successful period, becoming the fifth Frenchman with the most appearances for the club (134). During his six seasons at Barça, Umtiti secured an impressive haul of seven trophies, including two La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey titles, and two Spanish Super Cups. His time at Barcelona coincided with his greatest international achievement: winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup with the French national team.

Following his tenure at Barcelona, Umtiti’s career was marked by a series of injuries that limited his playing time. He went on to have spells with Lecce in Italy and Lille in France before becoming a free agent last summer. The decision to retire marks the end of a career that, while highlighted by major triumphs, was ultimately cut short by the persistent knee issues that he could not overcome.
