Ryan Routh, the 59-year-old man who attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump at a Florida golf course in September 2024, has been sentenced to life in prison. Judge Aileen Cannon delivered the sentence on Tuesday, stating that Routh’s actions and lack of remorse “undeniably warrant a life sentence.”
The Sentencing Memorandum
In her ruling, Judge Cannon emphasized the premeditated nature of the crime. She noted that Routh had spent months planning the attack and demonstrated a “will to kill anybody in the way.” Crucially, the judge highlighted that Routh has expressed “neither regret nor remorse” to his victims since his conviction.
The September 2024 Incident
The attempt took place at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach while then-candidate Donald Trump was golfing.
- Detection: A U.S. Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel poking through the bushes along the perimeter of the course.
- Response: The agent fired at the position, causing Routh to flee the scene in a vehicle.
- Arrest: Routh was apprehended shortly after by local law enforcement on a nearby highway.
A Mountain of Evidence
While Routh’s defense argued he never had a clear line of sight to the President, federal prosecutors presented what they described as a “mountain of evidence,” including:
- A semiautomatic rifle equipped with a scope and an extended magazine found at the scene.
- A handwritten list of locations where Trump was scheduled to appear.
- A note left for a friend that explicitly described the event as “an assassination attempt.”
Erratic Trial Proceedings
Routh elected to represent himself (pro se) during the trial, which began on September 8. His behavior throughout the proceedings was characterized as erratic:
- Outbursts: He frequently made references to Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Putin and even challenged Donald Trump to a game of golf during court sessions.
- Closing Argument: He spoke in the third person, rambling about U.S. history and his plans to buy a boat before being interrupted by the judge.
- Post-Verdict Violence: Immediately after the jury returned a guilty verdict, Routh attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen before being restrained by U.S. Marshals.
National Context
This incident marked the second attempt on Donald Trump’s life in 2024, following the July shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, by Thomas Crooks. Unlike the Butler incident, no shots were fired by the assailant in the Florida attempt thanks to the intervention of the Secret Service.
The Path Forward
Routh’s attorney, Martin Ross, has confirmed that they intend to appeal the life sentence. For now, Routh remains in federal custody to begin serving his term.
Case Summary:
- Defendant: Ryan Routh (59)
- Charge: Attempted assassination of a major Presidential candidate.
- Sentence: Life in prison without the possibility of parole.
- Judge: Aileen Cannon.
