Ramaphosa Participates In BRICS Summit

The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, is participating in a virtual BRICS Leaders’ Summit today, Monday, September 8, 2025.

During the Summit, heads of state from the economic bloc are expected to deliberate on the current economic situation of the world.

Leaders will also discuss the future of multilateral cooperation during the summit convened by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The virtual Summit follows the July 2025 in-person meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Additionally, Leaders are expected to address mounting challenges facing the international system, including trade tensions, geopolitical instability and the need for inclusive governance reforms, during the Summit.

South Africa’s presidential spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, says “The summit is a platform for leaders to exchange views on pressing global issues, with particular focus on the current economic environment and the state of the multilateral system.”

BRICS – comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa as founding members – has emerged as a powerful voice for the Global South, advocating for a more equitable world order and challenging traditional Western dominance in global institutions.

The bloc represents over 40 percent of the world’s population and nearly a quarter of global gross domestic product, positioning it as a key player in shaping international policy.
