George Weah
Ex-Liberian President and a one-time Ballon d’Or winner, George Weah, has bemoaned that racism in football is “profoundly damaging.”
Weah, a former AC Milan, PSG, Monaco and Chelsea player, made this known in a statement announcing his acceptance as the new lead of the FIFA Players’ Voices Panel on Racism.
He was appointed by FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, to lead the “all-important” panel.
Assuring Infantino of he and the other panel members’ commitment to fighting racism, Weah said “On behalf of the panel members, I also wish to assure you that as individuals who have personally experienced racism during our own careers, we understand how profoundly damaging it is – not just to the sport – but to players, fans, supporters, and humanity at large.
He added that “To my fellow distinguished panelists, it is a proud moment working with all of you as together, we strive to kick racism out of the beautiful game, for the good of the game, and for humanity.”
