ActionSA is seeking clarity on the awarding of a R194 million tender to Korone Engineering, a company linked to Nigerian nationals, to fix Lilian Ngoyi Street in Johannesburg. The party has written to Mayor Dada Morero and Transport MMC Kenny Kunene, demanding answers on the tender award.
During a recent oversight visit to the construction site, ActionSA discovered that Korone Engineering is owned by a South African in partnership with a Nigerian-born engineer. This revelation has raised concerns about the prioritization of foreign nationals over South Africans in procurement processes.
ActionSA’s questions include whether due diligence was conducted in the vetting process of the company, whether proper procurement processes were followed, and whether measures were implemented to ensure transparency in tender awards.
The party has also expressed concern about the recurring pattern of foreign nationals being awarded tenders, citing a previous instance where a company without tax clearance, run by Zimbabwean nationals, was awarded the same contract.
The City of Johannesburg has committed to completing the project by August 2025, with Mayor Morero stating that the city aims to deliver the final product within budget ¹. However, ActionSA’s demands for answers highlight the need for transparency and accountability in the tender award process.
