Protests Erupt Across Cameroon After Paul Biya Declared Election Winner

Cameroon has been plunged into unrest following the official declaration of President Paul Biya as the winner of the October 12 presidential election, securing another term at the age of 92. The country’s Constitutional Council announced that Biya received 53.66 percent of the votes, extending his rule that began in 1982.

His main challenger, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who garnered about 35 percent according to official results, has rejected the outcome, calling it a “stolen victory.” Bakary and his supporters insist that the vote was rigged in favor of the long-serving president, alleging widespread irregularities and intimidation during the polls.

The announcement has triggered massive protests in major cities including Yaoundé, Douala, and Garoua, where demonstrators have taken to the streets demanding transparency and a recount. Security forces responded with tear gas and live ammunition to disperse crowds, resulting in at least four reported deaths and dozens of injuries, according to human rights monitors.

International organizations, including Human Rights Watch, have condemned the use of excessive force and urged Cameroonian authorities to uphold citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly. The government, however, has defended its actions, saying the security forces are maintaining order and protecting public property.

The opposition has vowed to continue demonstrations until what it calls “the true results” are recognized. Meanwhile, Biya’s supporters celebrated the outcome, describing it as a sign of continuity and stability in a country facing economic hardship and ongoing separatist conflict in its English-speaking regions.

As tensions rise, analysts warn that Cameroon could face further instability if dialogue is not pursued. The international community has called on both sides to exercise restraint and engage in talks to prevent a deeper political crisis.

President Biya’s victory marks his eighth term in office, cementing his position as one of the world’s longest-serving leaders. For many Cameroonians—especially the youth—his re-election symbolizes not just political endurance but also the deep divisions that continue to define the nation’s future.
