Kenya’s President William Ruto recently met with more than 10,000 teachers at State House, recognizing them as the country’s greatest resource and patriots who dedicate extra hours to shaping the future of Kenyan children.
During the meeting, the President reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s education sector to develop a more competent workforce essential for national transformation.
Over the past three years, he said, his government has significantly increased the education budget from Sh540 billion to Sh702 billion, marking the largest boost in the country’s history.
According to him, efforts to address challenges related to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) have been made by providing clearer guidelines and ensuring a smooth transition for students and educators alike.
Teacher recruitment has also been a priority, with 76,000 teachers hired so far, and plans to increase this number to 100,000 by January to improve the teacher-student ratio.
Additionally, the government has constructed 23,000 classrooms, established the Open University of Kenya, and introduced a student-centered higher education funding model that benefits learners while increasing resources for universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
These initiatives form part of the broader strategy to enhance Kenya’s education system and prepare a skilled workforce to drive the country’s development goals.
