In a surprise move, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has retired Lieutenant General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and as Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army, effective immediately. However, Sanyatwe’s retirement is short-lived, as he has been appointed as the new Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, also with immediate effect.

Sanyatwe takes over the ministerial position from Honorable Kirsty Coventry, who stepped down after being elected as President of the International Olympic Committee. The announcement was made by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr. Martin Rushwaya.

This new appointment marks a significant shift for Sanyatwe, who has had a storied career in the military. He previously served as the commander of the Presidential Guard and was appointed as the Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army in 2023.
