President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning in honor of Ghana’s Defence and Environment ministers, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in a military helicopter crash along with six other persons on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
According to a statement released by the Presidency and signed by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the national mourning will begin on Thursday, August 7.
The statement announced that all official activities and engagements of Mr. Mahama for the remainder of the week have been suspended.
The Presidency described the helicopter crash as a “national tragedy”.

The Chief of Staff of Ghana, Julius Debrah, who confirmed the deaths of the eight persons at a press conference in Accra, has directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast until further notice.
Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and the country’s Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, died in the military helicopter crash which happened in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The other persons who died in the crash are Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Samuel Aboagye a former Parliamentary Candidate, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of NDC.
The crew members are Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
The Ghana Army in a statement said the victims were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi for a community mining program when the aircraft went off radar.
Their burnt bodies have since been retrieved.
