PPRC Suspends APC Over Non-Payment of Fines

The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has suspended the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Party for failing to comply with fines imposed by the Commission for violating provisions of the Political Parties Act, 2022 (Act No. 25 of 2022).

In an official letter addressed to the leadership of the APC, the Commission stated that it had found the party in breach of Section 39(1) of the Act following statements reportedly made by the party’s Secretary General and another senior member during the APC’s recent Mammoth Meeting. According to the Commission, the statements contravened provisions of the PPRC Act.

“I am directed by the Commission to refer to the above subject and to inform you that the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), pursuant to its mandate under the Political Parties Act (Act No. 25 of 2022), found the All People’s Congress (APC) Party in violation of Section 39(1) of the said Act,” the letter reads.

The Commission further disclosed that, in line with its statutory powers, it imposed fines on the party and formally communicated its decision, including the amount, the basis for the fines, and the payment timeline, on Monday 2nd February 2026.

However, the PPRC expressed concern that the APC had failed to comply within the stipulated timeframe.

“The Commission notes with grave concern that despite the expiration of the deadline on the 10th February 2026, and in spite of several reminders, the APC has failed, refused, or neglected to comply with the directive to pay the imposed fines,” the letter stated.

As a result, the Commission announced the immediate suspension of the party from engaging in political activities.

“Consequently, in strict adherence to the enforcement provisions of the Political Parties Act (Act No. 25 of 2022), the Commission hereby suspends the All People’s Congress (APC) Party from carrying out any political activity, including but not limited to meetings, rallies, elections, and all administrative and operational actions with immediate effect until full compliance is achieved in regard to the payment of the fines levied on the Party,” the Commission declared.

The letter emphasized that the suspension would remain in force until the outstanding fines are settled and the party receives written clearance restoring its operational status.

“Please be advised that this suspension remains in force until the APC Party settles the outstanding fines and receives written clearance from the Commission restoring its operational status. The Commission urges your Party to treat this matter with utmost seriousness and expedite the payment to avoid further sanctions as provided by law,” the statement concluded.

The suspension of the main opposition party is expected to generate significant political debate, particularly as it restricts the APC from holding meetings, rallies, or conducting internal administrative and operational activities until the matter is resolved.
