Polls Open In Seychelles As Citizens Vote To Elect New President, Lawmakers

Citizens of Seychelles headed to the polls on Thursday to cast their ballots in the Island nation’s presidential and Parliament elections.

Seychelles, an archipelago of about 115 islands, began its general elections on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

More than 77,000 voters are expected to cast their ballots through Saturday, September 27.

Recently defeated and outgoing Malawian President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, who doubles as Chairman of the SADC Political, Defense, and Security Body, appealed to voters to participate and called on all political parties to remain calm and responsible.

Voters across 26 electoral districts will elect both their President and members of the National Assembly. Eight parties are fielding presidential candidates, including incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan, who is running for a second term on a platform of “unity for a stronger and more inclusive Seychelles.” His main rival is Patrick Herminie of United Seychelles.

The presidential election requires a candidate to secure an absolute majority (more than 50% of the vote) to avoid a second round. At the same time, the legislative elections will fill the unicameral National Assembly, with 26 deputies elected by a first-past-the-post system and up to 10 additional seats allocated proportionally.

In line with the SADC’s principles for free and fair elections, the organization has deployed its Election Observation Mission (SEOM) to monitor the entire process. President Chakwera’s message to voters and parties emphasized the importance of peace and stability for the country and the region.
