The incident occurred on Saturday evening at approximately 9:20 p.m. in Byron Recreation Park, a well-used community space in the Weston area. According to police, the young girl was approached by an unknown man while walking through the park. Detectives say the encounter quickly became inappropriate, prompting the child to flee the area.

After running from the scene, the girl immediately sought help from a nearby group of women and disclosed what had happened. Police have praised both her quick actions and the response of the women who provided support and safety in the moments after the incident.

Description of the Man Officers Wish to Locate

The man officers are hoping to speak with is described as:
Black
In his early 20s
Tall
Slim build
Facial stubble
Wearing black clothing at the time of the incident

CCTV footage, taken from the surrounding area, has been released publicly in the hope that someone will recognise the individual. Police emphasise that the man in the footage is not a confirmed suspect but is believed to be someone who may hold vital information.

Police Praise Child’s Bravery

Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Andy Barry highlighted the young girl’s strength and the importance of the community’s response. He stated that the victim had displayed “enormous courage” in taking immediate action to protect herself and report the incident.

“She acted incredibly bravely in a frightening situation,” Barry noted. “Running to find help, alerting responsible adults, and making sure the matter was reported without delay were exactly the right steps. We are also very grateful to the women who stayed with her and ensured she felt safe until officers arrived.”

According to the police, two officers met with the child and her family on the same night. A detailed initial account was taken, and specialist officers are now supporting the family as the investigation develops.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Reassurance

Police resources have been increased in the area in the days following the report. Officers have been carrying out house-to-house inquiries, reviewing security footage from nearby homes and businesses, and maintaining a visible presence around local parks and routes commonly used by young people.

Authorities acknowledge that news of the incident may cause concern among parents and residents. To address these fears, Chief Inspector Barry assured the community that investigations of this nature are treated with the highest priority.

“We understand how upsetting reports like this are for local families,” he said. “Our goal is not only to identify the man described but also to make sure people feel safe when using public spaces.”

He urged anyone who was in or around Byron Recreation Park on Saturday evening and may have noticed unusual activity, a lone man matching the description, or anything suspicious to come forward. Even small or seemingly insignificant details, he added, can often play an important role in such investigations.
