Nigeria: Police Arrest Couple and Accomplice for Kidnapping Two-Year-Old in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the abduction of a two-year-old boy, Godwin Abeson, in the Sabon Pegi area of Lafia Local Government Area.

Commissioner of Police, Shettima Mohammed, disclosed this during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Lafia on Friday, October 17, 2025.

According to Mohammed, the suspects — identified as Asabe Isah, her husband, Isah Umar, and Emmanuel Polycarp — were apprehended following an intensive manhunt by operatives of the command.

“On October 14, 2025, at about 7:30 p.m., a report was lodged at ‘E’ Division that a two-year-old boy, Godwin Abeson of Sabon Pegi, Shabu, had been kidnapped and a ransom of fifteen million naira (₦15,000,000) was demanded,” the CP stated.

He added that detectives from the Shabu Division swiftly launched a manhunt, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the rescue of the child on October 16, 2025. The boy has since been reunited with his family.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Asabe Isah conspired with her husband to abduct the victim. The couple reportedly took the child to Angwan Nungu, Lafia, and handed him over to Polycarp, who kept the boy in captivity while demanding ransom.

The police chief said the suspects have confessed to the crime, adding that investigations are ongoing.

In a related development, CP Mohammed announced the arrest of a suspected armed robber and kidnapper, as well as the recovery of an AK-47 rifle in the Azara community of Awe Local Government Area.

He explained that on October 5, 2025, around 9:00 a.m., armed men attacked commuters along the Akiri feeder road in the Azara Development Area. A patrol team was dispatched to the scene, leading to the arrest of one Mohammed Alhaji Giginya of Kumar Village, who was attempting to flee.

Recovered items include one AK-47 rifle (Breach No. 58-127097110), one magazine, and a live round of 7.62mm ammunition. Victims of the attack were taken to the Azara medical facility for treatment.

During the period under review, the Nasarawa State Police Command arrested 24 suspected kidnappers and one suspected armed robber, while recovering three firearms and eight rounds of ammunition.

“The Nasarawa State Police Command remains resolute in safeguarding lives and property. We will continue to intensify intelligence gathering, strengthen community policing, and ensure that all criminals face the full weight of the law,” Mohammed affirmed.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and support the police by providing credible information to sustain progress in the fight against crime.
