Authorities in Niger State have arrested a 59-year-old man in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a 10-year-old girl in Minna, raising fresh concerns about child safety within family environments.
The suspect, identified as Julius Nyikwa, who is visually impaired, was taken into custody by officers of the Niger State Police Command following a report made on February 16, 2026.
According to police findings, the incident reportedly occurred in the Keteren-Gwari area, where both the suspect and the victim’s family live in the same compound. The girl is said to be the niece of the suspect’s wife, making the case particularly disturbing due to the close family relationship.
Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed that the case was initially reported at a divisional station in Minna. Investigators allege that the suspect lured the child into his room, where the abuse took place.
Further inquiries suggest this may not have been an isolated incident. Authorities believe the suspect had repeatedly taken advantage of the child over a period of time.
The situation came to light when a family member noticed the child entering the suspect’s room and raised an alarm, prompting neighbors to intervene and leading to his immediate arrest.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a more detailed probe. Police say the suspect will be formally charged in court once investigations are completed.
Officials have assured the public that justice will be pursued, while also urging families and communities to remain vigilant and report any suspected abuse promptly.
Cases like this highlight the importance of safeguarding children and ensuring they feel safe to speak up if they are in danger or uncomfortable in any situation.
