Police and Opposition Supporters Fight In Cameroon As 92 Years Old Biya Seeks 8th Term in October Elections

Opposition supporters and Cameroonian security forces fought in the city of Douala on Sunday, June 8, 2025, as the 92 years old Cameroonian President, Paul Biya, seeks an eighth term of office in the country’s upcoming October Presidential election.

 

The clashes took place as activists and supporters of opposition leader Maurice Kamto’s MRC party fought to gain access to their party headquarters which was blocked off by security forces.

 

On Saturday, parts of Douala and the airport were blocked from being accessed by taxi drivers, motorcycle, as authorities looked forward to the arrival of Maurice Kamto.

 

Kamto was due to hold a meeting at his party’s regional headquarters.

 

On Sunday, Mr. Kamto shared a video online in which he alleged that he was being held at his residence and prevented by police from reaching his party headquarters.

 

In October this year, Cameroonians will go to the polls to vote.

 

President Biya’s party has been in power since 1960.

 

Opposition leader Kamto polled 14 percent of the votes in the 2018 disputed presidential election.
