A presidential jet transporting Liberian President, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, and his entourage from Lagos, Nigeria, nearly crashed while landing at the Roberts International Airport in Liberia.
The incident on Thursday night, May 29, 2025, caused temporary disruptions to flights at the Roberts International Airport. President Boakai was in Nigeria for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to airport authorities, part of the jet’s landing gear malfunctioned while approaching the runway.

The malfunction in the gear caused a rough landing, authorities noted.
There was panic at the airport due to the incident, forcing the cancellation of all scheduled flights for the night.
Mr. Boakai was safely evacuated and authorities have announced an investigation into the incident.
The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) in a statement, confirmed the “unfortunate near-accident situation” involving the presidential jet.
However, LAA denied reports indicating that the near crash was as a result of poor runway conditions at the airport.
According to LAA, “The runway infrastructure remains fully compliant with international aviation safety standards.”
The statement says the presidential jet has been removed from the runway and normal operations have resumed at the airport.
Furthermore, the LAA says “At this stage, investigation to establish the actual cause of the incident is ongoing, and the airport authority will keep the public informed.”
