The death toll from a powerful earthquake in the central Philippines has reached at least 60, as hospitals on the island of Cebu struggle to treat hundreds of injured residents, multiple local media reports sighted by Africa Publicity revealed.
The shallow, magnitude 6.9 quake struck late Tuesday, September 30, 2025, near the northern tip of Cebu Island, close to the city of Bogo — home to about 90,000 people — the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

In the aftermath, injured children cried and adults screamed in pain as they received treatment under makeshift tents outside the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Bogo. Medical staff moved patients outdoors amid fears of structural damage, following hundreds of aftershocks that shook the region overnight.

Black body bags were seen being loaded into vans headed for local mortuaries, AFP journalists reported.

As of Wednesday, up to 60 people have been confirmed dead, according to Rafaelito Alejandro, deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defence.
