Peter Mutharika Set for Swearing-In as Malawi’s Seventh President

President-elect Peter Mutharika will be sworn in on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, officially assuming office as Malawi’s seventh head of state after winning the 16 September general elections.

Mutharika secured 56.8 percent of the vote, defeating incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera in a race widely regarded as a test of leadership on economic management and governance. His running mate, Jane Ansah, will also be sworn in as Vice President.

The Ministry of Information and Digitalisation confirmed that invitations have been sent to regional and international dignitaries, including African Union member states’ leaders. Thousands of supporters are expected at the inauguration, with additional public viewing points arranged in Lilongwe, Mzuzu, and Mangochi to ensure nationwide participation.

Mutharika, who previously served as president from 2014 to 2020, is making a political comeback after losing to Chakwera in the 2020 re-run election. During his earlier tenure, he was known for championing infrastructure development and regional integration.

Local media report that former Presidents Bakili Muluzi and Joyce Banda are among those expected to attend the ceremony, which marks the start of a new chapter in Malawi’s political landscape.
