Severe thunderstorms have reportedly caused massive disruptions in air travel in the United States (US), with over 4,300 flights delayed across major cities on Monday, May 26, 2025.
Local media reports say the thunderstorms in the South, Plains and Mississippi Valley disrupted traveling Americans during the Memorial Day weekend.
Aviation tracking platform, FlightAware reported that as of 4:30 p.m. EDT on Monday, there over 4,300 flight delays and over 125 cancelations in and out of US airports.
According to reports, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport reported about 393 flight delays among flights originating from the airport, representing 34% of the flights leaving the airport on Monday. Federal Aviation Administration says a ground stop was issued earlier for all flights because of nearby thunderstorms.
Also, Denver International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston warned of ground delays of over an hour as thunderstorms impacted both airports, with 272 and 261 flight departure delays reported, respectively.
According to a report by Forbes, Southwest Airlines (1,029), American Airlines (587) and United Airlines (540) reported the most delays among US flight carriers through Monday afternoon.
Memorial Day Travels
Reports say an estimated 45.1 million people were projected to travel during Memorial Day weekend.
Of the 45.1 million projected travelers, about 3.6 million were expected to travel by plane.
