Renowned rapper and songwriter Big Zulu has shared his personal thoughts on the qualities he believes are important for a wife to have.
In the traditional village setting, Big Zulu emphasised the importance of a woman’s treatment and temperament over her beauty when it comes to marriage.
In an interview with David Mashabela on the King David Studio podcast, Big Zulu said when a man approaches a woman, that it is often initially due to her beauty. However, as the relationship progresses, the true worth of a woman is determined by the way she treats her partner.
“Beauty may attract a man, but it is the treatment and behaviour of a woman that ultimately determines her suitability as a wife,” he said.
In the bustling cities like Joburg, the ‘Ivolovolo’ hitmaker observed that there is a shift towards a more casual approach to relationships. He stressed that some women may not prioritise marriage or the responsibilities that come with it.
Big Zulu also mentioned that many city women may not possess the skills or willingness to cook, clean, and maintain a household, instead they rely on external help or modern conveniences like online food delivery services.
“They only know how to order food online,” said Big Zulu.
He also highlighted the issue of women who refuse to do housework, claiming that they are not “housekeepers” and that asking them to do chores is considered abuse.
In Big Zulu’s traditional upbringing, he values the roles of men and women within a relationship, stating that he does not believe in the concept of equality between the two. He expressed his desire to be a provider and a protector for his family, rejecting the idea of a 50/50 partnership in marriage.
He emphasised the importance of instilling these values in his children as well, stating that he wants his kids to grow up understanding the traditional roles of both men and women in a relationship.
“I want to be a man to my family and to my wife. I don’t recognise that ‘50/50’ and I don’t want my kids to grow up knowing that,” he said.
The artist also believes in a traditional approach to relationships, where the man plays a leadership role, while the woman supports and stands by his side.
