Nigeria’s Christian Association Revises Kidnapping Toll to 315 After School Abduction

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) announced on Saturday that a detailed headcount has confirmed 315 students and staff members were abducted during an attack on a Catholic school the previous day—significantly higher than the initial figure of 227 released shortly after the incident.

According to CAN, the updated number came after a verification exercise was carried out in coordination with school officials, local community leaders, and church representatives. The organisation said early estimates were based on incomplete attendance records as families rushed to locate missing children and teachers.

The mass abduction adds to a troubling pattern of school kidnappings in parts of northern Nigeria, where armed groups have increasingly targeted educational institutions for ransom. CAN called for immediate government intervention to secure the safe return of the abducted individuals and urged security agencies to strengthen protection around schools in high-risk areas.

Local authorities have not yet released an official statement confirming the revised figure, but community members say rescue efforts are already underway.
