Nigerian street-pop artist, Portable, has disclosed that he intends to return to school in order to upgrade his knowledge and improve how he runs his music career and record label.
Portable, who already holds an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) from Kwara State Polytechnic, said the music industry today demands more than just talent and popularity. According to him, understanding royalties, publishing rights, streaming revenue, and business contracts is now essential for long-term success.
He explained that many artistes lose money because they do not fully understand the business side of music, and he does not want to be among those who earn heavily but cannot account for their income.
Portable stressed that further education will help him manage his label structure, make informed decisions, and protect his intellectual property in an industry where many young artistes are taken advantage of.
His statement comes at a time when several Nigerian artistes have been involved in public disputes over contracts, ownership rights, and royalty splits — issues that continue to highlight the importance of financial literacy and business education in the entertainment sector.
Portable says going back to school is his next move to ensure his music business becomes not only successful but sustainable.
