Police in Jigawa, Nigeria, have arrested a newly wedded wife for allegedly killing her husband with rat poison.
According to the Jigawa Police Command in a statement on Saturday, January 24, 2026, the woman’s husband fell ill immediately after eating a meal she prepared for him.
The statement signed by Shiisu Lawan, the Jigawa Police Spokesperson, says the husband fell ill after having lunch at their residence in Gauza village in Jahun Local Government Area (LGA), Jigawa, on Friday, January 23, 2026.
The statement indicated that the husband was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead while receiving medical treatment.
It added that following the death, operatives arrested the wife, who confessed to putting rat poison in her husband’s food.
The statement explained that the ‘killer’ wife told the police that she had been forced into the marriage by her parents.
It says “Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased reportedly took his lunch at home, after which he fell seriously ill and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention. Sadly, he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.”
According to the statement, “Following the incident, detectives from Jahun Division swung into action and arrested the wife of the deceased as the principal suspect.”
It said “During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison. She further revealed that she sent her cousin to purchase the rat poison used in committing the act.”
