Nigerian High Court Approves Three Overseas Labs for DNA Test in Paternity Case Involving Late Singer Mohbad’s Son

The Ikorodu High Court in Lagos State, Nigeria has approved three international laboratories to conduct DNA testing aimed at determining the paternity of Liam, the son of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The court selected two laboratories in the United Kingdom and one in the United States. According to counsel representing Mohbad’s father, one lab was nominated by each party, while the court independently chose the third to ensure neutrality in the process.

Background to the Dispute

Questions surrounding Liam’s paternity have been raised repeatedly by Joseph Aloba, the father of the late singer. Mr. Aloba has publicly maintained that his son’s remains will not be reburied until a DNA test is conducted to confirm the child’s biological link to the family.

Mohbad died on September 27, 2023, and his passing sparked widespread public attention and calls for clarity on multiple issues surrounding his death and family matters.

The paternity case is between Mr. Aloba and Wunmi, Mohbad’s widow.

Court Sets Date for Sample Collection Update

Speaking to journalists after the resumed hearing, counsel to Mr. Aloba confirmed that the matter has been adjourned to April 7 for an update on arrangements for the collection of DNA samples.

He explained that welfare officers will supervise the sample collection process to ensure transparency and proper procedure. All parties involved in the case are expected to be present during the collection.

The legal team also indicated that representatives of the Aloba family will monitor the delivery of samples to the selected laboratories and observe the testing process at the respective centres.

The outcome of the DNA analysis is expected to play a central role in resolving the ongoing dispute over Liam’s paternity.
