Nigerian Governor Declares Statewide Fast and Prayer Day in Response to Renewed Security Concerns

Borno State Governor of Nigeria Babagana Zulum has announced that Monday, November 24, will be observed as a statewide day of fasting and prayer, citing the need for renewed spiritual and community efforts amid a fresh wave of insecurity in parts of the North-East.

The governor made the declaration during a televised broadcast on Friday, November 22, urging residents of all faiths to unite in seeking peace and stability. Zulum said the state had endured more than a decade of violence linked to Boko Haram and other armed groups, noting that the recent resurgence of attacks required both vigilance and collective resolve.

“For 15 years, Borno has carried the heavy burden of insurgency,” the governor said. “Millions have been displaced, livelihoods destroyed, and every sector of society disrupted. Yet, through unity and faith, we overcame some of our darkest moments.”

Zulum praised the resilience of citizens and the continued efforts of security agencies, acknowledging that progress against insurgency in recent years had been possible because residents chose cooperation over division.

The governor emphasized that the call for fasting and prayer extends to all communities, regardless of religious background. He urged residents to dedicate the day to praying for long-term peace, improved security, and the prosperity of both Borno State and the country as a whole.

“This is a moment for collective reflection,” he said. “I ask every resident of Borno to join in prayers for the restoration of peace and the protection of our people. Let us seek God’s mercy and guidance as we confront the challenges before us.”

Security analysts say the governor’s declaration comes at a time when authorities are reviewing strategies to counter renewed activity by extremist groups in rural parts of the state. Community leaders have welcomed the announcement, describing it as both symbolic and unifying for a state that has endured years of conflict.

The statewide observance will take place on Monday, with mosques, churches, and community groups expected to hold special prayer sessions across Borno.
