Nigeria’s Edo State High Court (Criminal Court 2), has remanded 52 youth for protesting against kidnapping in the Ekpoma community of the State.

The youth were remanded at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre.

According to reports, the protesting youth were mainly students of Ambrose Alli University.

They had taken to the streets on Saturday, January 10, 2026 to protest the reported increasing spate of kidnapping and insecurity in their community.

During the protest, several properties including the palace of the monarch of the community were destroyed.

Police went into the community, alleging that thugs had hijacked the protest. Some arrests were made by the police.

A statement signed by the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said “regrettably, the protest was hijacked, and all the rules of peaceful protest were ignored, which led to incidents, including malicious damages, looting of property, vandalisation of shops, as well as military personnel discharging firearms at a protester.”
