Nigeria: Woman Arrested in Katsina Following Death of Husband Three Days After Wedding

The Katsina State Police Command has detained a woman, Zainab Muhammad, in connection with the death of her husband, Abubakar Abdulkarim, just three days after their wedding in Jibia town, Jibia Local Government Area.

According to local reports, the couple married on Thursday, November 18, 2025. The incident occurred on Sunday, November 23, at their residence in the Tashar Buja area. Community members said the husband was discovered unresponsive inside the home, prompting immediate calls to security personnel.

A family member, Aminu Danladi, said he and others had met Abdulkarim earlier in the day to finalize plans for a family visit scheduled for that evening. Danladi emphasized that the marriage was not arranged or forced, dismissing speculation spreading within the community. He described the pair as having a cordial relationship before and after the wedding ceremony.

Further background from community sources indicated that Zainab, who is reportedly in her 20s and originally from Katsina metropolis, was introduced to the groom by a relative who knew her from school. Some family members later claimed they had been unaware that she had previously been married.

Neighbours reported that Zainab’s behaviour after the incident raised concerns. Her unusual actions prompted older women in the neighbourhood to accompany her back to the house, where the husband was found. They immediately notified authorities.

Police spokesperson DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu confirmed the incident in a statement Monday. He said officers from the Jibia Division responded to the report at about 1:30 p.m. and transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

“One person is currently in custody in connection with the case,” Aliyu said, adding that investigators are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Shehu, has assured residents that a thorough investigation is underway and encouraged anyone with relevant information to assist law enforcement.
