Nigeria to Begin Local Production of HIV Drugs by 2026, Says NBRDA

The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has announced plans, in partnership with La Shipson Pharmaceuticals Ltd, to begin local production of HIV drugs in Nigeria.

The initiative, formalised through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to strengthen Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in producing life-saving medicines and reduce reliance on international aid for HIV treatment.

During the week, a delegation from La Shipson, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Godiya Shipi, visited NBRDA for further discussions on the project. The team included the company’s Board Chairman, Dr. Handsome Momoh, as well as partners and investors, all of whom pledged strong support for the initiative.

According to NBRDA, the project will be based within its facilities and will not only improve access to affordable HIV treatment but also create jobs, foster technology transfer, and upgrade the agency’s laboratories and research capacity.

Both organisations confirmed that implementation steps are underway, with the first batch of locally produced HIV drugs expected to reach the Nigerian market by the first quarter of 2026.
