Police in Nigeria’s Rivers State have arrested a 26-year-old man named Goodnews Iberi, for allegedly kidnapping and murdering a 25-year-old lady named Rita Eleonu.
According to Police, suspect Goodnews was arrested following investigations into the disappearance of Eleonu.
Police said the suspect is a native of Rumuaakunde community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The deceased hails from Rumuekini community in Obio Akpor Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Monday, January 12, 2026, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Superintendent of Police, Grace Iringe-Koko, revealed that the suspect, acting in collaboration with his gang, lured the victim to an evil forest along the Emuoha axis of the East-West Road in the state before killing her.
The statement noted that the suspect and his gang kidnapped Rita and contacted her family, who paid 210,000 Naira ransom to secure her freedom.
Unknown to the family, the suspects later allegedly killed the lady and buried her in a shallow grave in the forest, the police statement noted.
Suspect Goodnews was arrested in his hideout in the early hours of January 8, 2026 and durinb interrogation, he confessed to kidnapping and killing the lady.
