Nigeria: Peter Obi Rejects Vice-Presidential Speculation, Confirms 2027 Presidential Ambition

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has dismissed speculation that he plans to run as a vice-presidential candidate in 2027, making it clear that his political ambition remains focused on the presidency.

Obi addressed the issue during an extended interactive session on X (formerly Twitter), where he responded directly to questions about his political plans ahead of the next general election. Reacting to claims that he could accept a running-mate position, Obi questioned the logic behind such suggestions.

He explained that his frequent international engagements are part of deliberate efforts to study governance systems and leadership models, not preparation for a subordinate political role. According to him, his visits to countries such as Indonesia—where he spent several days engaging with leaders and studying development strategies—reflect his desire to deepen his understanding of effective governance.

Obi stressed that such high-level engagements are not undertaken by someone preparing to serve as a vice president. He also noted the uncertainties of life, pointing out that no one can predict the future, while expressing gratitude for his continued safety despite the risks associated with constant travel.

Reaffirming his position, Obi stated unequivocally that he is pursuing the office of president, not vice president. He said his decision is driven by his belief that he possesses the experience, competence, and capacity to lead Nigeria through meaningful change.

The former governor added that his confidence comes from years of studying leadership, economic management, and public administration, as well as closely observing successful governance models across the world. He maintained that his political journey is guided by preparation, evidence-based learning, and a commitment to national transformation.

Obi has remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics since the 2023 elections, with supporters frequently urging him to contest again in 2027. His latest remarks appear to put to rest ongoing speculation about any vice-presidential ambition, while keeping his presidential intentions firmly in view.
