Nigeria: Night Raid Along Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road Leads to Arrest of 75 Suspects, Officer Injured

A coordinated late-night security operation by the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce has led to the arrest of 75 suspected criminals accused of harassing and endangering motorists along the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road.

The operation was carried out on Wednesday night, February 11, after security agencies identified several crime-prone spots along the busy corridor. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development in a post on X, noting that the raid was part of ongoing efforts to reclaim public spaces and improve safety on major roads in the state.

According to Wahab, those arrested include 68 men and 7 women, with substances believed to be illicit drugs recovered during the exercise. The suspects are alleged to be involved in activities that have made the coastal road unsafe, particularly at night, for commuters and residents in nearby communities.

The operation, however, was not without incident. Wahab disclosed that Inspector Omosanjo Mohamed, one of the taskforce officers on duty, was brutally attacked by hoodlums during the raid and suffered a serious head injury. The injured officer is currently receiving medical care.

Condemning the attack, the commissioner warned that assaults on law enforcement personnel would be met with firm consequences.

“Attacks on officers carrying out lawful duties will not be tolerated,” Wahab said. “All suspects arrested will be prosecuted in line with the law. Our commitment remains firm—to restore order, protect public spaces, and ensure the Coastal Road and other parts of Lagos are safe for law-abiding residents.”

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to be charged after preliminary screening, as the state intensifies efforts to curb crime and improve nighttime security across Lagos.
