Nigeria: Lagos Police Await Pastor Chris Okafor After He Fails to Honour SCID Summons Over Rape Allegations

The Lagos State Police Command is yet to question the Senior Pastor of Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, Chris Okafor, after he failed to honour an official invitation over allegations of multiple rape and other offences considered capable of disturbing public peace.

Police sources confirmed that Okafor was expected to appear at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, by 10:00 a.m. on Monday, following directives from the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh. The summons required him to report before the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the SCID.

Police investigation underway

In a statement issued on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said the invitation followed several petitions and complaints alleging sexual offences and related misconduct against the cleric. She added that the police leadership had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the claims.

However, an SCID officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed on Monday that the pastor did not report as scheduled.

“The directive was clear. Officers waited for him throughout the day, but he never showed up,” the source said, noting that the absence was recorded by investigators.

Another police source said individuals believed to be acting on Okafor’s behalf contacted the command to request additional time.

“Some people reached out, appealing that he be given more time. They assured the police that he would still present himself,” the source said, adding that no new date had been officially confirmed.

Victims yet to appear

The police also revealed that none of the alleged victims or witnesses had reported to the SCID for questioning as of Monday, despite assurances that security arrangements had been put in place for their protection.

According to the command, all complainants were urged to come forward, with guarantees that their identities would remain confidential throughout the investigation.

Efforts to obtain an updated response from the police spokesperson on Monday were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages were not returned before the report was filed.

Background to the allegations

The controversy surrounding the pastor emerged in mid-December 2025 after multiple allegations circulated on social media. One of the most prominent claims was made by Nollywood actress Doris Ogala, who alleged in Instagram videos posted on December 14, 2025, that she had a prolonged sexual relationship with Okafor beginning in 2017.

Ogala accused the cleric of making unfulfilled marriage promises, sharing explicit material and contributing to the breakdown of her former marriage. The allegations triggered widespread public debate and scrutiny of the pastor’s conduct.

Church response and wider implications

Amid mounting criticism, Okafor reportedly addressed his congregation on New Year’s Day, during which he apologised for what he described as past “mistakes” and publicly sought forgiveness.

There have also been reports that the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) is reviewing the matter and may consider disciplinary steps. Separately, the pastor is said to have stepped aside from active pastoral duties while investigations and public attention continue.

Police authorities have maintained that the case remains open and that all parties involved are expected to cooperate fully as investigations proceed.
