A Sharia court sitting in Kaduna has dissolved the marriage between Zainab Alhassan and Tijjani Muhammad after the wife sought divorce over her husband’s refusal to repair her damaged cell phone.
Zainab Alhassan informed the court on Tuesday that she was no longer interested in the marriage and was ready to seek divorce through Khul’i, a type of Islamic divorce where the wife returns the dowry to the husband to regain her freedom.
Dispute Details and Testimony
Alhassan testified that her husband allegedly smashed her N70,000 cell phone while they were fighting. She claimed the altercation started while she was watching a movie on the device. However, she admitted to the court that she did not have a witness to support her claim that Tijjani damaged the phone.
To secure her release from the marriage, she told the court she was prepared to return the N30,000 dowry she had received.
The defendant, Tijjani Muhammad, stated that he had no objection to his wife’s plea for divorce but flatly disagreed with the accusation that he was responsible for damaging her phone.
Court Ruling
After hearing both parties, the Judge, Malam Mu’awiyya Shehu, granted the divorce. The Judge dissolved the marriage on the basis of Khul’i but dismissed the complainant’s separate plea requesting that her husband be compelled to pay for the repair of the damaged phone.
