The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed profound grief over a fatal road accident that led to the death of seven residents of Lawanti community in Akko Local Government Area.
The crash, which occurred on Saturday, involved a vehicle conveying the victims to Maiduguri in neighbouring Borno State, where they were reportedly travelling to attend a wedding ceremony. Details of the accident, including the exact location and cause, have not yet been officially released by road safety authorities.
Governor describes loss as devastating
In a condolence message issued by the Director-General of Press Affairs at the Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, Governor Yahaya described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken not only the affected families but the entire Lawanti community, Akko LGA and Gombe State as a whole.
He said the sudden loss of lives under such circumstances was deeply painful, noting that words alone could not ease the grief of families who lost loved ones in the crash.
Condolences to affected families
The governor extended his sympathy to the families of the victims, including the District Head of Jalingo, Bello Hassan Babangida, who lost his sister and niece, as well as Idris Lawanti Maigari, who lost his daughter. He also commiserated with Idris A. Isah Lawanti, the councillor representing Akko Ward, who lost close relatives in the accident.
Prayers and call for patience
Governor Yahaya offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased, asking Almighty Allah to forgive their shortcomings, accept their good deeds and grant them Aljannatul Firdaus. He also prayed for strength, patience and comfort for the bereaved families and the wider Lawanti community as they mourn the loss.
Road accidents remain a major concern in the region, often linked to long-distance travel, road conditions and vehicle safety. Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution, particularly during periods of increased travel for social and religious events.
