The Federal Government has announced that it will provide necessary support to victims’ families and survivors of a recent boat mishap in Borgu, Niger state.
The tragedy, which occurred on Tuesday, resulted in the loss of 32 lives, although approximately 50 people were rescued. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, stated that the government received the news with a heavy heart, noting that the tragedy is particularly painful as it comes just four months after devastating floods in Mokwa, also in Niger.
“We extend our deepest condolences to families of the victims, government, and the people of Niger State,” Idris said in a statement. He confirmed that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) will work closely with the Niger State Government to provide prompt relief and assistance.
Idris also commended the state government for its swift rescue operation and urged the public to prioritize safety when traveling on inland waterways. He specifically cautioned against embarking on boat journeys without wearing appropriate protective jackets. The federal government has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch a nationwide campaign to raise public awareness of these safety measures.
